Letter from Robert Owen to Louis Kossuth

Scope and Content

Typescript copy of a letter from Owen to Kossuth, the ex-Governor of Hungary. In the letter Owen's admiration for Kossuth is clear; he expects Kossuth to play in "the speedy destruction of the present wretchedly ignorant and most irrational system of society". However, Owen is critical of Kossuth, writing that the destruction of despotism and aristocracy which he and [Giuseppe] Mazzini strive is "equally erroneous in principle and practice; for, compared to the government of a well-intentioned despot with ability, democracy is an inferior mode of governing".

Kossuth is urged to adopt the "divine truths" of Rational Socialism.
