Letter from James Rigby to Robert Owen

Archive Unit

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Rigby provides Owen with an update of the progress he has made with tasks carried out on Owen's behalf. This includes arranging for copies of Owen's work The New Existence of Man upon the Earth to various individuals, forwarding Owen a copy of the Advertiser and visiting Allens of the Strand [London]. Rigby also informs Owen that it is likely that [William] Pare will have to go to Paris on his own, but he will be all right if he meets up with Mr Goupy.

Also present is a manuscript copy of an article taken from Lloyd's newspaper entitled 'William Cobbett and Mr Owen'. In the article scorn is poured on Owen for publishing a supposed communication from William Cobbett through a Mrs French, one of the "most advanced mediums of the United States" in his latest part of The New Existence of Man on Earth.
