Buchanan give details of his life in Cape Town. He has joined the Juvenile Christian Association and the Young Men's Temperance Society. He documents his studies; he writes that "I employ my leisure time in reading, writing and studying Latin & French." He describes local customs and clothing; he includes an account of "the Caffers."
A note has been added: "a sensible letter...showing how much the training at New Lanark did further people. The writer is the son of Buchanan, the first infant school pupil pupil at Lanark."
