Letter from James Rigby to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

In this manuscript letter Rigby provides Owen with a comprehensive update of progress made with tasks carried out on his behalf.

Rigby follows this with discussion regarding the "new plans" put forward by a Mr Watkins. After having a long talk with Watkins, Rigby is of the impression that the plan is a good theory, but one which is mis-applied by the "Old System" and which "turns every blessing into a curse". He hopes [Thomas] Atkins "Strong Powers" will turn him away from his plans.

The letter closes with Rigby providing a detailed history of the life of John Ward, a cutler who owns a shop on Bishopsgate Street, London. An Englishman of Irish descent who came to London via Sheffield, Ward was for a short period living at the community at Little Bentley, Hampshire.
