Letter from David Vines to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

Manuscript letter: Vines informs Owen that he has reserved the theatre in Reading for Owen to give lectures, next week over four evenings. He has placed advertisements in the local papers and has ordered leaflets to be circulated around town.

Vines states "narrow minded bigots have been using all their endeavours to prevent" Owen from lecturing in the town, including forcing the Philanthropic Society to refuse him the use of their hall, and printing letters in the local papers denouncing his principles. But even with this opposition against Owen, Vines states that there will be an "overwhelming audience" attending his lectures.
