Letter from David Matthews to Robert Owen

Scope and Content

This manuscript letter is written around the edges of a printed circular letter from Matthews. In the circular letter Matthews explains in detail the misery he has come across whilst in Ireland after venturing there with the aim of effecting "disinterested philanthrophy" in a land to which he has no connection

In the manuscript letter Matthews pleads with Owen to raise funds and send them to the "central committee for the employment of the poor". In doing so Matthews writes that he makes "no excuse for troubling a philanthropist".
