Charles Rowcroft (1798-1856), novelist, was born on 12 July 1798 probably in London, the eldest son of Thomas Rowcroft, an East India merchant and London alderman, and his wife Jannett, née Guest. After living in Tasmania, Australia for a number of years he returned to England and bought a boarding school in Stretham, London. He later became the Editor of the Courier newspaper and wrote a number of novels.
