Minute book of the Bachelors Ball, Nottingham, 1908-1928

Scope and Content

The volume contains signed meeting minutes of the Bachelors. The minutes deal exclusively withthe arrangement of the Bachelors Ball. The volume is accompanied by a menu card for the 1909 ball,copies of annotated letters inviting members to attend meetings, and lists of people invited to theballs. The volume has an index at the back containing the names of 'ladies' and 'gentlemen' invitedto the balls.

Administrative / Biographical History

Nothing is known about the Bachelors other than that they were a committee of Nottinghamdignitaries who arranged prestigious balls (parties). It is likely that the balls were organised inaid of charity. The minute book in this collection refers to the arrangement of Bachelors balls in1905, 1909, and 1912. It records that plans to organise a ball in 1928 were abandoned. The presidentfor every ball was Lt Col Richard Leslie Birkin.
