Design for a Book Cover

Scope and Content

Black and white photograph of a design for a book cover [by May Morris], in ink and pencil on paper, upside down, leaning against a white stand. The design is very similar to that in 7MMO/1/174, only half drawn, but worked to much greater detail in places. The front cover has the design of an exotic plant, decorated with a lattice of love hearts, with five simplified flowers in a semi circle above it, and a few hearts drawn in at the bottom left corner. There is a suggestion of a monogram on the back cover. The photograph is pasted onto a page, along with 7MMO/1/174, upside down (so that the design is the correct way up). The object was held and photographed at the Bodleian Library, Oxford University. The photographs were taken during research by Elizabeth Masterman, for her book on May Morris. The text on the page reads 'Monogram Binding / [album / blotter?]'.
