Letter

Scope and Content

Robert Dell to W. P. Crozier.

Location: Geneva.

He says he is right to have little confidence in any official information. He was surprised at the recent suggestion by Cole that there should be government control of the press. He talks about the Foreign Office and its relationship [controlling] with the British press. He says 'Simon and the F.O. are far from united'. He believes that the Europe situation is very bad and that Stresa and Geneva will achieve nothing. Laval 'is incompetent' and changes his mind all the time.

He was annoyed to discover that in Lady [Margaret] Rhondda's absence he was described in Time and Tide magazine as M.G. Correspondent in Germany. He has written a letter to correct 'the erroneous impression that the Manchester Guardian has some sort of responsibility for my article'.
