Scope and Content

Manuscript and typescript correspondence from The Arts Council of Great Britain. Includes Music Panel Paper no. 1: statement by the Director 1945, further papers of the Music Panel and minutes of the Opera Sub-committee 15 Dec 1966.

Typescript copy letters from Britten and his secretaries. Also one draft letter and photocopies of manuscript letters from Britten. Includes typed transcriptions of some letters.

Also includes a list of files relating to Britten, the English Opera Group and the English Music Theatre held at the Arts Council of Great Britain archives. And photocopies of some of these papers including correspondence relating to the Festival of Britain 1951 and the commissioning of Billy Budd 1948-1949, correspondence mostly between Eric Crozier, Rudolf Bing and The Arts Council relating to the first production of The Rape of Lucretia 1946-1947, and correspondence relating to Coronation commissions 1952.
