Papers of Percy Beard (Whaley Bridge & Buxton Co-operative Society)

Scope and Content

The collection contains a wide range of items representative of Beard's long career with the co-operative. There are a range of documents relating to his time spent with the various branches of Whaley Bridge including trade accounts and balance sheets as well as a correspondence collection. As well as this several catalogues for items sold by the stores are represented alongside price lists. The collection also contains a range of pamphlets on a variety of subjects, ranging from the postal tuition scheme that Beard undertook to gain qualifications to the National Membership scheme.

Administrative / Biographical History

Percy Beard began his co-operative career as a back shop boy when he left school at 14. He took various co-op exams in retail and groceries to further himself. He was manager of several of the stores in the Whaley Bridge and Buxton co-operative, beginning with the Buxworth branch in the 1940s before moving on to the Furness Vale branch in the 1950s. He ended his career at the Howich End branch, where he retired aged 65 in 1968.
