The archive of his music consists of several different strands, divided here into three sections. The main strands are music written or arranged for, and sometimes by, himself; music which he inherited from members of his family or acquired from earlier performers, notably Harry Lauder and Harry Gordon; material which appears to have been submitted to him for possible performance (only some of which was used); and arrangements of a wide spectrum of traditional music (mostly Scottish), music hall songs, popular music of the big band era, and recent popular music from the Beatles to Tom Jones.
