Political cartoons by James Gillray (1756-1815) and Charles Jameson Grant (fl. 1830-1852); 1791 and c.1830-1840

This small collection contains nine printed and coloured cartoons, mounted onto seven pieces of cardboard. Only one of the cartoons is by James Gillray; the remainder are by Charles Jameson Grant. The subjects of the cartoons are miscellaneous.

James Gillray (1756-1815) trained as an engraver, and studied at the Royal Academy Schools in London. He became well known as a political caricaturist in the 1780s and 1790s. He lived with his print-seller, Hannah Humphrey, who nursed him following a suicide attempt in 1811 until his death in 1815.

Very little is known about Charles Jameson Grant, a radical caricturist. The earliest examples of his known work as a caricaturist date from 1830. His output of work declined after 1840. He was alive in 1852, but his date of death is not known.
