Robert Thomson was a missionary with the London Missionary Society in Tahiti, South Seas, 1838-1851. He was married to Louisa Barff, daughter of Rev Charles Barff, LMS missionary at Huahine, Tahiti, 1816-1864.

Extract of letter from W. W. Gill, Sydney, 7 Feb 1895, addressed to Mr [Wardlaw] Thompson and adhered to the inside cover indicates that the manuscript was handed to the London Missionary Society by him in 1895, as a friend of the late Rev R. Thomson who died at sea in  before he could complete the work. The manuscript was given to Gill by the widowed daughter of the author.
