Miscellaneous German autographs

Scope and Content

Several of the autograph letters in the collection are addressed to Hermann Georg Fiedler, though the collection also includes some of his own autograph material, as well as autograph material that he collected. Other items were collected by the Library. Some of the individuals represented are listed below:

Administrative / Biographical History

The collection includes autograph material of the following individuals: Hermann Georg Fiedler (1862-1945), Taylor Professor of German; Ferdinand Freiligrath (1810-76), poet; Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832), poet; Gerhart Hauptmann (1862-1946), poet; Joseph Kainz (1858-1910), actor; Heinrich Laube (1806-84), writer; Friedrich Max Mller (1823-1900), Taylor Professor of Modern European Languages; Jean Paul Friedrich Richter (1763-1825), writer; Rainer Maria Rilke (1875-1926), poet; Georg Sauter (1866-1937), an artist who painted a portrait of H.G. Fiedler; Ernst Stadler (1883-1914), a poet and Rhodes scholar who read for a B. Litt. in Modern Languages at Oxford, and was supervised by H.G. The manuscripts are arranged alphabetically by author, except where the subject is deemed to be more important.

Acquisition Information

Several of the German autographs in the Taylor Institution Library came by gift, largely from the estate of Professor H.G. Fiedler. Others were acquired from dealers' catalogues, or bookshops, during the librarianship of the late Donald Martell Sutherland, Librarian 1949-70.
