Scope and Content

A collection of miscelleneous deeds, legal documents and other items from the papers of Sir Robert Clayton and his partner John Morris. The majority of items (RYCH/3720-3806) relate to London. Places in Bedfordshire, Berkshire, Buckinghamshire, Cambridgeshire, Cornwall, Devon, Dorset, Essex, Glamorgan, Gloucestershire, Hampshire, Kent, Leicestershire, Lincolnshire, Middlesex, Northamptonshire, Northumberland, Suffolk, Surrey and the West Riding of Yorkshire are also represented by one or two items each.

Acquisition Information

Rylands accession no. R83813. Purchased by the John Rylands Library at auction at Sotheby's on 20 March 1940 (Lots 694-715), through the London booksellers Maggs Brothers Ltd, for £27 12s 10d, along with English MS 959.

Separated Material

The letters which were acquired in 1940 with the present collection of documents are now kept separately as Rylands English MS 959.
