Bollin cum Norcliffe (Cheshire) Manorial Court Records

Scope and Content

This subseries comprises a bundle of verdicts or records of proceedings at the sessions of the court leet and view of frankpledge with court baron held for the manor and fee of Bollin cum Norcliffe in Wilmslow parish, Cheshire, together with six suit rolls.

The suit rolls list tenants who owed suit of court at the twice-yearly sessions of the court leet and court baron held for the manor and fee of Bollin cum Norcliffe. All the rolls are in fact volumes. A roll would generally be used for several years, the list of suitors being amended as changes of tenancy took place. Suitors' names are written down the left-hand side of the page, and marks against them indicate their attendance, essoins or non-appearance. These are neatly recorded in pre-ruled columns.

Separated Material

Most of the manorial court records for the manor and fee of Bollin cum Norcliffe were retained by Roger Grey, 10th Earl of Stamford, during his lifetime. They were subsequently deposited in the John Rylands University Library by the National Trust in 1990-1994: see GB-0133-EGR2/5 . They include suit rolls immediately preceding and succeeding the present items.
