Writer and poet Kate Davies was born in Berthlwyd Lodge, Pren-gwyn, Llandysul. She delighted in literature, story-telling and local history and competed in local eisteddfodau. She published a volume of her own poetry, Cerddi Kate Davies (Llandysul, 1946), a memoir entitled Hafau fy Mhlentyndod ym Mhentref Pren-gwyn (Llandysul, 1970), and Canrif o Addysg Gynradd yn Hanes Ysgol Tre-groes, 1878-1978 (Llandysul, 1978). Her father Daniel Thomas, also a poet, was brother to schoolmaster, writer and poet Thomas Jacob Thomas ('Sarnicol').
