Roscoe Review

Scope and Content

The Roscoe Review was published by the Department between 1968-1975, and with the exception of 1968, it was an annual publication. Its main purpose was to publish the annual Roscoe lecture, hosted by the Department, given by a distinguished speaker on a topic relevant to adult education. The lecture was usually delivered at the annual reception for W.E.A. students at the University. However the Review also acted as an annual report for the Department with information on courses delivered, and the work of its staff (similar to information given in the annual Report of Council to Court).

The Roscoe lectures were:

  • 1968 no.1, W. Brynmor Jones, "Adult education in tomorrow's world - the role of universities".
  • 1968 no.2, Lord Ritchie Calder, "Sharing knowledge and skills".
  • 1968 no.2, Herbert Huxley, "Reflections after a decade of extra-mural Greek".
  • 1969 Lord Butler, "Universities and the world we live in".
  • 1969 Edmund Leach, "Education for what?".
  • 1970 Anthony Wedgewood Benn, "Learning to use power".
  • 1971 Walter Perry, "The Open University".
  • 1972 Sir William Mansfield Cooper, "The community of learning".
  • 1973 Sir John Woolfenden, "Museums and libraries: partners in life-long education".
  • 1974 Sir Jack Longland, "Leisure needs of the community".
  • 1975 W.E. Styler, "Fifty years of adult education".
