Administrative / Biographical History

The correspondence relates to Apsley Cherry-Garrard's fellow British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913 member Henry Bowers who served for a time on board HMS Worcester. Bowers accompanied Cherry-Garrard and Edward Wilson on the winter journey to the emperor penguin rookery at Cape Crozier to collect specimens during the British Antarctic Expedition, 1910-1913. Later he was a member of the Pole Party who with Scott, Wilson, Lawrence Oates and Edgar Evans reached the South Pole on 17 January 1912. All five men perished during the return journey.
