Scope and Content

The file contains papers relating to the 150th anniversary of the Royal Botanical and Horticultural Society of Manchester and the Northern Counties in 1977.

There is correspondence between the Chairman, Mr A.E.R. Goulty, and the Earl of Derby, Canon Eric Saxon (Rector of St Ann's, Manchester), Peter and Pat Hayden, Colonel Dennis Cheetham, Professor Sir Arthur Armitage (Vice-Chancellor of Manchester University), Viscount and Viscountess Ashbrook, William Downward (Lord Lieutenant of Greater Manchester), Neal Smith, D.H. Slade, J.S. Singleton, Judge J.L. Addleshaw, M.K. Burrows, Mrs Pat Walley, and Heather kershaw. There are letters concerning invitations to the anniversary luncheon and subsequent letters of thanks and congratulations.

In addition there are: a photocopy of typescript notes supplied by the National Westminster Bank archivist on Edward Loyd (MBH7/1/12); a copy typescript letter from Lord Derby to H.M. The Queen, sending loyal greetings on the 150th anniversary of the Society (MBH7/1/13); a photocopy of the guest list for the 150th anniversary luncheon (MBH7/1/20); a printed menu for the luncheon (MBH7/1/21); a manuscript draft of Mr Goulty's speech in responce to that toasts (MBH/1/22); a photocopy typescript letter from The Queen to Lord Derby, thanking the members of the Society for their loyal message and congratulating them on the anniversary (MBH7/1/24); and a photocopy of the Garden Society Quarterly Review, Winter 1977, containing a report on the 150th anniversary (MBH7/1/33).
