TELEPHONE BOOKS

Scope and Content

Recording messages received from all sources, i.e. members of the public, other police forces, the fire service and police constables, reporting incidents and crimes, the date, time and method of each call, i.e. via 999, the telephone exchange or 'Tie' (which appears to be a private phone system between police and fire stations) and subsequent action taken, often underlined or written in red. Most of this information was typed straight onto the pages which are inserted in the binders, but a few from other police forces, police constables, C.I.D. and high ranking officers have been cut from another source and glued onto the pages of the binders. 999 calls disappear from these books from 1959, when Master Logs begin.
