Administrative / Biographical History

Newport Harriers Athletic Club was formed in September 1896 in Newport, Monmouthshire. The Club's inaugural treasurer, Frank Liddington Johns, was instrumental in the creation of the International Cross Country Championships, first held in 1903. Newport Athletic Club was formed in 1875 as the Newport Cricket, Athletic and Football Club; in 1884 the name was changed to Newport Cricket, Athletic, Football and Tennis Club, and in 1895/6 it became Newport Athletic Club.
