Papers of William Hamling MP (1912-1975), Labour politician

This collection mainly contains circulars and publications, with a few original letters and notes, relating to Hamling's activities and interests and dating mainly from 1966-1969. The content of most of the folders relates to a wide range of matters.

William Hamling was born in Liverpool in 1912, and, having served with the Royal Marines during the Second World War, took up teaching. He joined the Labour Party in 1947 and was member of parliament for Woolwich West from 1964 until his death in 1975. He was parliamentary private secretary to Kenneth Robinson, Minister of Health and Minister of Planning and Land, 1966-1969, and to Harold Wilson, Prime Minister, 1974-1975. He was also a trustee of the National Maritime Museum, a governor of the Foudroyant Trust for maritime training and a Justice of the Peace for the Blackheath Division. Hamling died in 1975.
