Administrative / Biographical History

Glasgow University Dramatic Club was founded in May 1921 as a student drama society of the University of Glasgow, Scotland. The object of the society was to promote "dramatic art in accordance with the principles and ideals of the University of Glasgow". Membership was open to matriculated students of the University and ex-members of the Society who had graduated from, or left, the University, on payment of an annual subscription. The officers of the Club were a president, secretary (who was also vice-president), business manager, stage manager, assistant secretary, publicity organiser and wardrobe mistress. These officers were elected at the annual general meeting held in February or March of each year. The officers, along with the retiring president and one other ordinary member, formed the committee who administered the club. A further 2 first-year students were co-opted onto the committee at the end of the first term. The society produced dramatic productions of standard repertory works and occasional short one-act plays produced at lunch times in the University's Queen Margaret Union as well as providing a social function for its members. By 1966, the club was commissioning works from local playwrights and was performing at the annual Edinburgh Festival. By c1968 it appears that the society had ceased to exist.
