Various papers, including material on wartime service in the Ministry ofInformation (American Division), 1939-1945, correspondence concerning thereduction of the 50 year closure period for Public Records, 1962-1998, materialrelating to the UN Advisory Group, 1964-1978, personal papers and memorabilia,mostly connected with the United States, 1935-1960, and photographs taken duringvisits to the United States, 1935-1969.

Administrative / Biographical History

Professor George Herbert Nicholas (1911-1998) was educated at Mill HillSchool and at New College, Oxford, where he graduated with an MA in 1938. Hewas a lecturer at Exeter College, Oxford, 1938 and Fellow, 1946-1951. He wasa Faculty Fellow, Nuffield College, Oxford, 1948-1957 and a Nuffield Reader inthe Comparative Study of Institutions, 1956-1969. From 1969 to 1978 he held thepost of Rhodes Professor of American History and Institutions, Oxford University,was a Fellow of New College, 1951-1978, Emeritus, 1978-1980 and HonoraryFellow from 1980. He served as Chairman,British Association for American Studies, 1960-1962 and was Vice-President ofthe British Academy, 1975-1976. From 1989 to 1994 he was Director, NewCollege Development Fund. In the United States, he worked as Visiting Professor,Brookings Institution, Washington, 1960, Albert Shaw Lecturer in DiplomaticHistory, John Hopkins, Baltimore, 1961, and Visiting Fellow, Instituteof Advanced Studies, Princeton, 1964. He was Visiting Faculty Fellow, Instituteof Politics, Harvard, 1968 and Honorary DCL, Pittsburgh, 1968. He was the author ofa number of publications on British and American politics and political relations.
