Dorothy Lewis was elected a Councillor of the City of Cardiff Council in May 1944, was subsequently elected an Alderman in 1955, served as the Lord Mayor for the year 1960-1961 and continued to serve on the Council into the 1970s. Mrs Lewis was made an OBE [Order of the British Empire] in 1957
