Olivier Archive. Vols. CDV-CDVI. “The entertainer”, by John Osborne. Autograph draft, probably the first, with many additions and deletions. It is likely that this is the particular script referred to by Joan Plowright (Lady Olivier) in her memoirs And that’s not all (2001) as having been sent to Olivier by Osborne “in another of his periodical fits of remorse” after writing an attack on Olivier and the National Theatre in the London Evening Standard. This version almost certainly antedates the typed version of Act 1 which George Devine sent to Olivier in New York in late 1956, which Olivier is said to have read at once and telephoned Devine to say he would accept the part on the strength of that act alone.
