Administrative / Biographical History
The Innerleithen Co-operative Society was founded in 1856 in Innerleithen, Scottish Borders where it traded for nearly 150 years. The Society ran from only one branch for over 100 years but by 1966 it had 3 stores and a butchers, as well as providing drapery, footware, furnishing and hardware, and electrical services from its store on Chapel Street, Innerleithen. The society attracted a firm core of members which steadily increased over its long history from 213 members in 1887, to 1,085 a few years before it was amalgamated into the Border Co-operative Society in 1970.
