Administrative / Biographical History
The Haddington Co-operative Society was founded in 1867 and within 20 years it had grown to a society providing groceries, shoes and boots, and a bakery to its 485 members. The society continued to grow and membership increased steadily through the First World War and into the inter-war years. In 1932, the society boasted 2,029 members and 3 branches.
Four years later in 1936 the Society merged with the Tranent Co-operative Society – the largest in the area – to form the Tranent and Haddington Co-operative Society.
