Administrative / Biographical History
The Dumfries Co-operative Society was created in 1973 following a change in name from the Dumfries and Maxwelltown Co-operative Society. The Society did not change in size or membership due to this name change. The Dumfries Society comprised of many branches and by 1979 it boasted a superstore as well as 5 supermarkets, a butchers and a petrol station.
The Society traded as the Dumfries Co-operative Society for 13 years before merging with the Central Borders Co-operative Society in 1986 to form the Border Regional Co-operative Society.
