A photocopy of a page of The Haddingtonshire Courier, No 164, 12 Dec 1862. One article relates to the second quarterly meeting of the Tranent Co-operative Society. At this meeting, a motion was unanimously adopted to send excess 'profits' for the relief of the Lancashire distress. At this time the American Civil War was limiting the amount of raw cotton coming into the Lancashire cotton mills, this led to closures and left many workers with no source of income.
