Administrative / Biographical History
The Peebles Co-operative Society was founded in 1873 and within 15 years it had 323 members. The Society traded for 95 years and during that time grew to be a large organisation, which owned many services. By 1966 these services included 3 grocery stores, 2 of which were self service, a store selling clothing, furnishing & electrical items, a shoe shop, and a funeral service.
The Society was amalgamated with the Innerleithen and Galashiels United Co-operative Societies in 1968 to create the Border Co-operative Society, which later became Central Borders Co-operative Society.
