Scope and Content

MSS.Add.6694-6698: Joseph Foster, consolidated alphabetical index of admissions to all four inns of court, covering the period to 1800, 5 volumes, compiled c. 1885. The index contains at least 50,000 entries, with some dates of the entrants's call to the bar and other biographical details. The volumes have the armorial bookplates of Joseph Foster. Foster was unable to obtain support to publish the work.

MS.Add.6699-6707: Sir Robert Forsyth Scott, consolidated alphabetical index of admissions to all four inns of court, covering the period 1801-1887 and 1899-1901, 9 volumes. The index contains over 20,000 entries. According to a note in MS.Add. 6701, p. iii, the volumes were 'transcribed by Sir R. F. Scott'. The index was evidently intended as a continuation of MS.Add.6694-6698, and derived from Foster's collections. Scott transcribed them between 1899 and 9 July 1901, and added material himself in MS.Add.6707, pp. 95-464. Some newspaper cuttings are loosely inserted into the volumes.

MSS.Add.6708-6721: Joseph Foster, consolidated alphabetical index of calls to the bar in the four inns of court, covering the period 1518-1887, 14 volumes, compiled c. 1887. The entries are written mostly on the verso, with some additions on the recto. The volumes include cuttings pasted into them from Foster's Register of admissions to Gray's Inn (1887) and Men at the bar (1887). There are more biographical notes than in the admissions series (MS.Add.6694-6707), and the notes have been augmented with newspaper information by Sir Robert Scott. The volumes have the armorial bookplates of Joseph Foster.

Attached to fos 143 and 299 are letters from William H. Richardson to Joseph Foster, 22 July and 1 January 1891, the latter with a printed list of perpetual curates for Grendon, Bucks. Inside the front cover are the bookplates of Joseph Foster and of Sir Robert Forsyth Scott.

Attached to fo. 179 is a letter from Harry Baber to Foster, 2 January 1890. Inside the front cover is the bookplate of Joseph Foster.

The places covered include Bangor, Brecon, Dixton, Flintshire, Hanmer, Hawarden, Llandaff, Montgomery, New Radnor, Norton, Old Radnor, Presteign, Radnorshire, Ruthin, and St Davids. Inside the front cover is the bookplate of Joseph Foster.

Administrative / Biographical History

Joseph Foster (1844-1905) began carrying out genealogical research early in his life, compiling peerages of Quaker familes (1862-1872), and of county families in Lancashire (1873) and Yorkshire (1874). He went on to publish Peerage, barontage and knightage (1879), Men at the bar (1888), and Admissions to Gray's Inn (1899). Foster also edited and supplemented J.L. Chester's London marriage licences (1887), and produced the Oxford matriculation register in Alumni Oxonienses (8 vols., 1887-1891).

Sir Robert Forsyth Scott (1859-1933), antiquary, and master of St John's College, Cambridge.
