Lilian Lenton to Nina Popplewell

Scope and Content

Typescript letter with manuscript annotations, written from Twickenham, Middlesex, in response to the National Council of Women of Great Britain's request for information regarding the force-feeding treatment imposed on imprisoned suffragettes. Lenton reluctantly outlines her own experiences during her imprisonment in Holloway in 1912, detailing her methods of coughing violently to avoid being forcibly fed. She describes how the doctor diagnosed her with 'double pneumonia and pleurisy due to food getting into the lungs' and how she was not expected to survive.
