Court books of the Manor of Bishopston 1844-1913; notes on the ownership of wrecks in the Gower Manors, extracted from the 'Penrice' and 'Margam' manuscripts c1900.

Administrative / Biographical History

Bishopston Manor was located around the village of Bishopston in South-West Gower, West Glamorgan, approximately 6 miles west of Swansea. The Manor of Bishopston was part of the temporalities of the See of Llandaff. Whenever the See fell vacant, the Lords of Gower laid claim to the manor leading to disputes. In the end, the rights of the crown to the temporalities of the see during vacancies were conceded but Bishopston Manor continued to be an episcopal manor until 1923. At this date the manor became part of the newly-created Diocese of Swansea and Brecon.
