The letter refers to Jack's letter [Hughes's son] and Hughes comments that he is doing well in the regiment and that they must realise they may not hear from whilst the war [possibly the first Anglo-Zulu War]. Hughes then discusses his surroundings. The parson of Saint Laurence also has staying a nephew from Australia who's surname is Brown and who was christened Tom in honour of Hughes's book. Hughes's son has written in red ink "To Mama at Bath [?]".
