This letter refers to Hughes's labours being well worth the effort if they should result in keeping the Glastonians out of Chester [Gladstone won the 1880 election for the Liberals against Disraeli's Conservatives but Hughes distrusted him, see WHB/1/4/10. The Chester seat was rife with corruption on both sides and the 1880 election saw the victorious Liberal's unseated, although later exonerated by Royal Commission.].
Letter from Jefferey/Joseph [?] Bascham, House of Commons, Monday c1880 [as refers to a Gladston election]
