The letter refers to letters by Jack [James] Hughes that Madeleine is returning to Mrs Hughes and comments on the contents of them. She refers to difficulties and famines he has endured and "the dullness of the life must have been extreme". Jack emigrated to America in the 1870s and so this is possibly what his letters were about. She then writes of a forthcoming bazaar to raise money that both ladies are involved with.
