Scope and Content

Letters from Natal to family members written in the year she and her husband, Sir Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell (the Colonial Secretary of Natal), arrived there. Includes detailed descriptions of life in the colonial service, surroundings (especially Maritzburg), impressions of local people, her husband's routine and work schedule, the danger of war, descriptions of Sir Bartle Frere.

Administrative / Biographical History

Fanny Oakley Mitchell was born Fanny Oakley Rice, daughter of W. M. Rice. She married Charles Bullen Hugh Mitchell (1836-1899) in 1862. After a military career, Bullen became the Colonial Secretary in British Honduras in 1868, and then served briefly in British Guiana, before his appointment as Colonial Secretary of Natal.
