Scope and Content

Magazine produced for the 1948 Rag week. This edition was called ‘The Futility Edition’. Proceeds from the magazine were donated to charitable causes in Manchester.

Features include a Rag parade route map with points of interest (pubs), a crossword puzzle and various poems and cartoons. There are references to rationing, prefabricated housing, Trade Unions and socialism. Cartoons show demeaning racial stereotypes.

This volume’s comedic advertisements include the Co-operative Wholesale Society, the North Ancoats, Manchester and Salford and St Mary’s hospitals, Hyde’s brewery, Foster’s shaving cream, Sivewright Airways, Woodmet Ware, the Christie and Salford Royal hospitals, the North Manchester Maternity Home, Windak and others.
