Administrative / Biographical History

Pontypool Urban District Council (UDC), Monmouthshire, was established under the provisions of the Local Government Act 1894. It was enlarged on 1 April 1935 by amalgamation with Abersychan and Panteg urban districts and comprised the parishes of Abersychan, Pant-teg and Pontypool. The Council comprised a number of councillors and a chairman. Its responsibilities included sanitary services, sewerage, refuse collection, housing, streets, cemeteries, libraries, parks, controls on buildings such as petrol stations, and licensing of public entertainments. UDCs were administered by a number of committees and by appointed officers including a Clerk, Treasurer, Medical Officer of Health, Surveyor and Sanitary Inspector. Pontypool UDC was abolished in 1974 following local government reorganisation and its functions were assumed by the new Borough of Torfaen.
