ROLL CONCERNING THE COURT OF THE CASTLE MILL AT OXFORD

Scope and Content

As with the Coroners roll in P6/1L/1

above, this roll is a very unusual

survival. From the early Middle ages,

the Castle Mills had been granted the

power to demand that all bakers grind

their wheat there, or pay fines (see

Vol. IV of the Victoria County History,

pp.328-329). However, this roll

recording an apparently random sample of

cases heard by the Court of the Mill

appears to be the only one to survive

from the Middle Ages.
