YMCA Unofficial Papers: Papers relating to Anglo-German YMCA Youth Camp at Burford

Typescript booklet titled 'Blazing the Trail' relating to the Anglo-German Youth Camp held at Burford, near Dorking, 20-31 August 1935.

Booklet includes a list of names and addresses of the English, French, and German campers. It also records the impressions of the campers and their thoughts about the scheme.

Compiled by the organiser, Percy Waiting, the booklet's foreword states that it had been compiled in order for the boys to share their thoughts about the Camp. It appears to have been issued to participants at Christmas 1935 as a keepsake.

The purpose of the Anglo-German camp was to help the boys develop a better understanding of each other. The programme of events at the Burford Camp indicate that boys sang, held a camp fire, played sports, and attended church. Visits to nearby places were arranged, including trips to Windsor and London.

Percy Waiting appears to have had a long association with the YMCA. He was Kingston-upon-Thames YMCA Secretary during the 1950s.
