Administrative / Biographical History
This private bank can trace its origins to Thomas Paget, a wealthy stockbreeder with important family connections with the lace and hosiery trade. In 1814 he succeeded his father as a partner in Pares & Heygate of Leicester (est. 1800). He withdrew in 1825 to form Pagets & Kirby, in partnership with William Paget, Joseph Paget and Samuel Kirby, the former chief cashier at Pares. Branches were opened in Melton Mowbray (1835) and in Loughborough (1855). The lack of family succession led to the sale of the business to Lloyds in 1895.
