Letters from James Paul Cobbett

Scope and Content

Correspondence from James Paul Cobbett (1803-1887) to John Fielden, mainly concerning the progress of the Champion and Weekly Herald, and keeping him informed (in great detail) of day to day affairs. James seems to be much more closely involved than John Morgan in the running of the newspaper, and the letters include details of sales and propaganda, discussion of articles and the political events surrounding them, requests for money to cover various expenses, reports of threats of prosecution for libel, and questions concerning the actual physical layout of the pages.

There are also two letters from James to his brother John, also relating to the Champion.
