Taylor Deeds

Scope and Content

Papers, deeds and letters relating to premises at Aldin Grange, Broom, Relley Paper Mill and Gaudyhaugh in St. Oswald's parish, Durham and at Ushaw Hill Top, [parish Lanchester], Co. Durham, sometime in possession of John Taylor (d. ca. 1823) andthen by marriage the Macrae family. There is, in addition, apart from business papers relating to the paper mill and some plans, a range of ephemera including a few documents relating to Worcester and a copy of the InclosureAct of 1784 for Leyburn, North Yorkshire.

Administrative / Biographical History

The property concerned in these documents is based upon the estate of John Taylor (died ca. 1823) in the Browney Valley, Co. Durham. This included Aldin Grange and Ushaw Hill Top, as well as Relly Paper Mill, mining interests and land bought bythe North Eastern Railway Company and Deerness Valley Railway Company. His heiress, Francis Mary Taylor, married Dr Archibald Macrae of Bruiach, Invernesshire in 1856 and the property was formed into a trust. They later lived in Richmond, Yorkshire,and Worcester.

The property was sold in 1862 and subsequent owners include Durham Cathedral and St Cuthbert's College, Durham.

Acquisition Information

Deposited on permanent loan in the Worcester Record Office on 4 December 1957 by Gallaher & Russell, solicitors, 2 Pierpoint Street, Worcester, with permission to distribute them appropriately; received by the University of Durham Departmentof Palaeography and Diplomatic (from 1990 part of the University Library's Archives and Special Collections department) on 11 February 1958. This collection was renamed in 1999, having previously, with the Arthur Hedley Maps, been referred to as theWorcester Solicitor's Papers.
