The Neuro-Psychiatric Unit [NPU] was established at Bootham Park in 1966 with 20 beds, for the investigation and management of patients with various neuro-psychiatric disorders. In 1972 the NPU was designated as a Special Centre for Epilepsy by the DHSS, following the Reid Committee Report on the care of patients with epilepsy - two other such units were founded at the same time at Chalfont, Bucks and Park Hospital, Oxford.
