Scope and Content

Pedigrees and other papers relating to Derbyshire and other counties, many being transcripts or extracts from church registers, the Domesday Book and manuscripts in the British Library and Public Record Office. The papers were written or compiled by Thomas Blore, unless otherwise indicated.

MS.Add.3874: Collections, vol. 1, c. 1800: papers relating to Derbyshire families and estates, including material from Tutbury Priory, Staffordshire.

MS.Add.3875: Collections, vol. 2, c. 1800, including: a list of abbreviations; transcripts of inquisitions post mortem, with alphabetical indexes of places and personal names; a copy of Lord George Talbot's settlement of 18 January 1639.

MS.Add.3876: Collections, vol. 3, c. 1800, including: transcripts of charters; papers relating to Derbyshire families, estates, manors and officers.

MS.Add.3877: Collections, vol. 4, c. 1800, in the hands of Blore and six others, including Francis Bassano of Derby and Thomas Brailsford. The papers include: a consideration of heralds and baronets; pedigrees and notes concerning Derbyshire, Staffordshire, Lancashire and Cheshire; lists of arms; an account of arms of nobility and gentry; other material relating to Derbyshire.

MS.Add.3878: Collections, vol. 5, c. 1800, in the hands of Blore and four others, including S. Degge. The papers include: extracts from the Public Record Office close rolls; sketches of seals; transcripts and abstracts of documents regarding Derbyshire; pedigrees; extracts from the Domesday Book regarding Staffordshire.

The papers include: transcripts and abstracts of documents of Sir Robert Burdett of Foremark, Bart, the Marquesses Townshend, Philip Gell Esq. of Hopton, and Sacheverell Pole Esq.; notes and pedigrees taken from Harleian manuscripts.

The papers include: transcripts, pedigrees and extracts from parish registers regarding Derbyshire; illustrations of seals; transcripts and abstracts of deeds regarding the property of Robert Wright Esq. of Great Longstone.

MS.Add.3881: Collections, vol. 8, c. 1800: notes, inscriptions and epitaphs in Derbyshire and Staffordshire churches.

MS.Add.3882: Collections, vol. 9, in an early 18th century hand, with additions in a slightly later hand. The papers include: the preface to the Domesday Book; the Domesday Book entry for Derbyshire; transcripts and abstracts of deeds and other documents regarding Derbyshire lands and families, including lists of sheriffs of Derbyshire and Nottinghamshire, and wills.

Administrative / Biographical History

Thomas Blore (1764-1818), topographer, was born on 1 December 1764 at Ashbourne, Derbyshire. He attended the local grammar school, before becoming a solicitor in Derby. Blore moved to Hopton to manage the affairs of Philip Gell, and on Gell's death in 1795 entered the Middle Temple in London, although he was never called to the bar. Blore's topographical works included extensive work on the topography and antiquities of Hertfordshire. He was the father of the architect Edward Blore (1787-1879). He died on 10 November 1818 in London.
